BEAST No. 1 Sweeper: Asia Here We Come!

데 뷔 1년 8개월. 비스트는 그동안 4장의 미니앨범과 1장의 정규 앨범을 발매하며 대한민국 남성 아이돌 그룹의 명맥을 이었다. 정규 1집 'Fiction and Fact'(픽션 앤 팩트)는 9만 장(한터정보시스템 집계)장이 판매됐으며 타이틀 곡 'Fiction'(픽션)은 각 방송사 음악 프로그램 1위를 차지했다.

앨범 활동을 마무리하고 21일 일본으로 출국, 본격적인 활동에 돌입하는 비스트를 17일 정오 서울 영등포구 여의도 메리어트호텔에서 만났다. KBS 2TV <뮤직뱅크> 마지막 방송을 앞둔 비스트는 기자들과 만나 1개월간의 짧은 활동에 대해 털어놨다.

"후크송 아닌 'Fiction', 인기 끌까 조마조마 했죠"

이 기광은 "날씨가 더워지는 상황에서 서정적인 느낌의 'Fiction'으로 활동하는 것이 걱정스러울 때도 있었다"며 "그럼에도 많은 분이 사랑해줘 감사하다"고 운을 뗐다. 비스트는 2009년 10월 'Bad Girl'(배드걸)을 시작으로 'SHOCK'(쇼크), '숨', 'Beautiful'(뷰티풀)까지 점차 발전해 왔다. 팬클럽 뷰티는 20만 명으로 추산되고 있다. 비스트는 "그동안 팬이 많이 늘었다고는 하지만 이번 활동을 통해 '좀 더 대중적인 사랑을 받고 있구나'를 느꼈다"고 털어놨다.

비스 트의 정규 1집에는 멤버 용준형의 자작곡도 수록됐다. 5번째 트랙인 'Freeze'(프리즈)는 용준형이 꾸준히 작곡 공부를 한 결과물이다. 과거 앨범 수록곡 랩 메이킹을 직접 했던 용준형은 "래퍼인데 남이 써 주는 가사로 랩을 하기엔 자존심이 상했다"며 "언더그라운드에서 활동하는 분들과 친분을 맺게 되며 더욱 (랩에) 신경을 쓰게 됐다"고 전했다. 용준형은 "멤버들이 개인 활동을 하는 동안 나는 밤낮없이 녹음실에서 곡 작업을 했다"며 "이번 앨범에서 그동안의 성과를 보여주게 돼 무엇보다 뿌듯하다"고 했다.

정규 1집 자작곡 수록, 아이돌 고정관념 벗다

" 처음에 이 곡을 사장님(소속사 큐브엔터테인먼트 홍승성 대표)에게 들려 드렸을 때, '이게 뭐냐'는 반응을 보이셨어요. 당황했죠. 나중에 신사동호랭이 형이 '난 매번 이런 반응과 맞닥뜨린다'며 '풀이 죽거나 당황하면 안 된다'고 하더라고요. 제 곡이 앨범에 실리기로 결정된 뒤, 녹음할 때 제가 직접 디렉팅을 맡았어요. 멤버들에게 주문하기가 쉽진 않았는데 오히려 '신경 쓰지 말고 편하게 하라'고 하더라고요. 그래서 편해졌죠."

용준형은 함께 작업하고 싶은 가수로 FT아일랜드 이홍기를 꼽았다. 자신의 색깔에 밴드 음악을 접목해 보고 싶다고 했다. 용준형은 슈퍼주니어 김희철, 슈프림팀 사이먼디(쌈디), FT아일랜드 이홍기, 최종훈 등과 함께 친목모임 '쪼꼬볼'을 결성하기도 한 사이다.

비스트의 수익 분배 원칙은 '여섯이 똑같이'이지만 용준형의 저작권료는 별도다. 그는 "매달 통장에 들어오는 돈이 다르다"며 "부모님께 맡겨 돈을 차곡차곡 모으고 있다. 처음엔 내 녹음실이 갖고 싶었지만 돈을 모아 부모님께 집을 사 드릴 계획이다"고 밝혔다. 막내 손동운 또한 "아버지 차를 바꿔 드릴 예정"이라고 미소지었다.

손동운은 "바쁘게 활동하느라 힘들 때도 있었지만 매 순간 '가수가 되길 잘했다'고 생각한다"며 "1주일 정도 휴가가 주어진다면 여행차 제주도에서 휴식을 취하고 싶다"고 했다.

'비스트 하면 이 노래!' 대중적 대표곡 만드는 게 목표

뮤 지컬 <광화문 연가>, KBS 2TV <자유선언 토요일>의 <불후의 명곡2-전설을 노래하다>에 출연했던 리드보컬 양요섭은 폭넓은 팬층을 얻게 됐다고 했다. 팬사인회 행사에 가면 10살 초등학생부터 어머니팬까지 다양하다고.

양 요섭은 "다른 노래를 편곡해 부른 것은 <불후의 명곡2>가 처음이었다"며 "(탈락해 불이 꺼지면) 어둠 속에서 참담했지만 심수봉, 부활 선배님에게 수업을 받는 것 같아 좋았다"고 말했다. 멤버들은 "설령 <불후의 명곡2>에서 꼴찌라고 해도 쟁쟁한 아이돌 가수 중 6등 아니냐"며 "나라면 못했을 것"이라고 혀를 내둘렀다.

비스트는 다음 주 일본으로 건너가 후지TV 'HEY! HEY! HEY! MUSIC CHAMP'(헤이 헤이 헤이 뮤직 챔프) 등 음악 프로그램에 출연한다. 아사히TV '뮤직 스테이션' 출연도 조율 중이다. 오는 8월에는 포미닛, 지나 등 소속사 식구들과 함께 'UNITED CUBE'(유나이티드 큐브) 공연을 연다. 시트콤, 드라마에 출연하기도 했던 이기광은 솔로 앨범 등 개인 활동 계획에 대해 "아직은 여섯 명의 비스트가 좋다"며 "앞으로는 모르겠지만 지금은 팀 활동에 전념할 것"이라고 했다.

마지막으로 비스트는 "우리 노래, 춤 등이 따라하기 쉽지 않다는 것을 잘 안다"며 "대중적인 대표곡을 갖는 것이 목표"라고고 덧붙였다.

한편 소속사 관계자는 <오마이뉴스>에 "일본, 싱가포르 등 아시아에서도 비스트 및 '유나이티드 큐브' 콘서트를 열 계획이지만 영국, 브라질 등에서도 요청이 들어오고 있다"며 "긍정적으로 검토 중"이라고 덧붙였다.

‘Fiction is not a hook song, it’s a hit song that will climb it’s way up’

Lee Kikwang said "Like the weather that’s getting warmer, that is the feeling of the lyrics in ‘Fiction’ so we were worried about our activities" "But anyway, there are a lot of people who gives a lot of love and we are grateful" reminiscing their luck. In October of 2009, BEAST starts with ‘Bad Girl’ and continuously evolving with ‘Shock’, ‘Breath’ and ‘Beautiful’. Their fanclub is estimated to have 200000 B2UTYS. BEAST said "The number of fans are increasing but through our activities we get the ‘I love you the more popular you become’ feel".

One of the BEAST member who helped through the songs in the first album is Yong Junhyung. The 5th track ‘Freeze’ is one of the work of Yong Junhyung in his studying of composing. It is more meaningful since Yong Junhyung wrote it himself. "When an unknown rapper wrote the lyrics, we become too pride and they might get wounded" "I started doing activities with undergrounds and made friends with the underground rappers". Yong Junhyung also added "While the other members have their own personal activities, I was working at the recording studio, day and night" "I want to show something more than a fresh performance from this album".

“At first, the song was first heard by the CEO (Hong Seuhong, representative of Cube Entertainment) and his reaction was ‘What is this’. I panicked. Later Shinsadong Tiger hyung said ‘I have received a lot of reactions like that before’ and also added ‘Foolish people die, don’t panic’. I am determined to get my songs on the album, so the recordings, I’ve been doing my own directing. I don’t want the other members to bother me so I told them ‘Don’t bother me, I want some peace’. And so I got that peace."

Yong Junhyung pointed that he wants to work with FT Island singer, Lee Hongki. They want to see the combination of the band’s music. Yong Junhyung with Super Junior Kim Heechul, Supreme Team Simon D (SamD), FT Island Lee Hongki and Choi Jonghun sometimes together went for the ‘Chocoball’ social gathering.

BEAST’s earning principles are ‘to divide equally among the six’ but Yong Junhyung’s is separated from the rest. He said “The income is different every month. I set aside some money neatly for my parents. Firstly, I want to own my own recording studio and the money I get, I plan to buy a house for my parents. Maknae Son Dongwoon added “I want to buy my dad a new car” with a smile.

Son Dongwoon said “We are very busy with activities and whenever times got hard, I always think that ‘I have to be a good singer’” “If given a break, I want to go to on a one-week vacation to Jeju Island”.

‘This song is so BEAST!’ they want the song that represents them to become a hit.

Musical , KBS 2TV of which where Yang Yoseob has performed and he's already gaining a lot of fans. At the fansign, his fans varies from 10-year-old elementary students to mothers.

Yang Yoseob said “To sing an arrangement like that is the first for me in ” “(When I quit) I was kind of in the dark, but Shim Subong and Buhwal senior gave me good lessons”. BEAST is going to Japan next week and will perform in Fuji TV music program ‘HEY! HEY! HEY! MUSIC CHAMP!’ They will also appear in Asahi TV’s ‘Music Station’.
